Sabra Conkling: Professional Painter and Dancer. What Emotions Can Paintings Bring Out? Season 1, Episode 17

img-responsive

Art is expression of emotion captured in many forms. Sabra Conkling does through her paintings and her various canvases. Using her ingenuity, she tells us a little about all the surfaces she has ventured to paint on, what started her out as an artist, and her weekly hustle as not only an artist but a mother as well.

Who is Sabra?

Sabra is an artist, living in the arts district near downtown OKC. She is a painter with a strong eye for detail and ventures to make MASSIVE murals for people to hang in their homes and be spirited away to a foreign land, feel emotions through abstract colors, or accept a new face in their home. Whatever painting that her buyers pick up, they are sure to have a marvel and a doorway into another world on their walls.

The Art of the Hustle

Parts of her weekly hustle is to send the kids off to school, paint her works, dance for money on the side, and find buyers for her paintings. If all of that sounds easy, I beg of you to either babysit a single child for a whole evening. THEN imagine that times two. THEN imagine painting, working, and finding time to find relatively inexpensive art supplies, make a masterpiece, sell it for a decent price, make a profit and use that money to put into more art. It’s a fun and tedious cycle. Kudos to her for doing it so effortlessly.

Painting with Emotions

We discuss the broad range of emotions felt by her patrons that see her art. Through the four corners of her canvas (and sometimes amazing make-shift canvases of all shapes, sizes, and materials) they are able to see into something that is beautiful, dark, funny, or scary. She tells us a little about how art isn’t always supposed to make you happy when you look at it. Some of the most powerful emotions come from the fear or darkness in the piece. Sometimes you don’t know how to feel or express how you feel. Many times you can buy a work just because this is an emotion you’ve never felt before and can’t quite quantify in words. These works can be complex and Sabra points out that life is never easy and stories are told because of the hardships a character goes through and some of her paintings express just that. The butterfly is beautiful because the spider is menacing, just like the good times are good because there are tough and hard times. Art can make you feel all of that. Not just the tingly feelings of happiness.
